چکیده

We study firms compatibility decisions in a horizontal differentiation model with network externalities. By means of a nested multinomial logit demand structure, we describe the trade-off between network externalities and product differentiation. Simple and general results are derived, which hold for any finite number of firms and which account for any functional form of the externality function. Some insights into the influence of installed bases on the evolution of compatibility decisions are also given.

Durable Goods Monopoly with Network Externalities with Application to the PC Operating Systems Market

We analyze a model of multi-period monopoly in durable goods. Taking into consideration the special conditions of software markets, we assume that there are no used software markets and that manufacturers stop selling older software when they introduce a replacement model. We show that nominal as well as discounted (real) prices decrease over time but are above cost, thereby violating the Coase...

The pivotal role of network externalities in software systems:

Network externalities are the effects on the value of a product that can be ascribed to the presence of a network of users of such product. They play an essential role in the business success of any product. The authors think that such role is even larger in the software industry, where (a) documentation and effective training often lack, and (b) consumers regard as major benefits interoperabil...

Cooperative Strategies to Leverage Network Externalities: Evaluating Network Partnerships in the B2b Software Market

In the presence of network externalities, product features compatible with standards and larger installed bases of the relevant technologies lead to expanded market shares and increased customer valuation. Our research finds that firms which collaborate with other organizations do so to enhance product compatibility and expand their installed bases. We study the effects of such cooperative stra...

Standardization and Network Externalities

The standardization issue in the ICT industry is mainly compatibility in the presence of network externalities. The compatibility in Economics usually means interoperability between competing products. For instance, the VHS VCRs and the Betamax VCRs are incompatible in the sense that tapes recorded in one format (e.g., VHS) could not be played in the other format (e.g., Betamax). Hence, in the ...

Vertical Product Di erentiation, Network Externalities, and Compatibility Decisions

We analyse the subgame perfect equilibrium of a four stage game in a model of vertical product di erentiation, where the consumer's evaluation of a product depends on its inherent quality and on its network's size. First, two rms choose their product's inherent quality. Then they may mutually agree on providing an adapter before competing in prices. Finally, consumers buy. We nd that, despite t...
